What Passthrough does
Passthrough uses Apple’s AVFoundation to export a selected movie as an MP4 on your device. It has three visible conversion choices:
- Fast Passthrough keeps existing media streams when the selected movie and MP4 support them.
- Compatible 1080p creates a broadly compatible MP4 up to 1080p.
- Efficient HEVC 1080p creates a smaller HEVC MP4 up to 1080p.
Availability depends on the selected movie and preset. If the system cannot export that combination to MP4, Passthrough shows an error and leaves the source file unchanged.
Requirements
- Mac — macOS 14.0 or later on Apple silicon. Intel Macs are not supported.
- iPad and iPhone — iPadOS or iOS 17.0 or later.
Using the app
Mac
Use Add Videos to choose movies, or drag movie files into the app. Choose an output folder, select one of the three conversion choices, and click Start. Completed files are written to the folder you chose; use Show to reveal a completed file in Finder.
iPad and iPhone
Use Add Videos and select movies from the system Files picker. Choose one of the three conversion choices and tap Start. Completed files are saved in Passthrough’s Documents/Converted Videos folder. Tap Share or Save on a completed item to use the system share sheet.
Frequently asked
Why did conversion fail?
Passthrough can export only movie and preset combinations supported by your device’s media system. Try a different visible conversion choice, or use another source movie. A selected file must contain a readable video track.
How are completed files kept safe?
Passthrough writes a temporary partial MP4 first. Before assigning its final name, it checks that the output has data, contains a video track, and has the expected duration. Existing output files are not overwritten, and the source file is never modified or deleted.
Reporting a problem
Please include your device and OS version, the visible error message, the selected conversion choice, and the source movie’s file type. Please do not send video files unless asked.

常见问题
为什么转换失败？
